Family Reports Six Likely Drowned as Van Swept Away in Houston Flood

HOUSTON, Texas — The death toll from Hurricane Harvey and the resulting floods may have climbed to 14 as a family reports six of their members may have drowned. The clan claims two great-grandparents, in their 80s, along with four children were swept away by flood waters on Houston’s northeast side and are feared dead. Texas officials report eight other people died in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

More Flooding: TS Harvey Could Restrengthen after Return to Gulf Waters

Officials with the National Weather Service warn additional heavy rains and catastrophic flooding could hit the Houston area during the overnight hours of Monday morning. Hurricane officials also report that Tropical Storm Harvey is beginning to move back to the Gulf of Mexico where warm waters could foster re-strengthening.

1st Death from Hurricane Harvey Confirmed in Texas

Hurricane Harvey, now a tropical storm, claimed its first human casualty as it slammed into the coastal bend community of Rockport, Texas. Officials confirmed the fatality Saturday afternoon, although the man died during an overnight fire as the storm ravaged the town. Rockport Mayor C.J. Wax told reporters his town took the hurricane “right on the nose.” He said officials discovered the body of the deceased man Saturday morning. Officials were unable to respond to the fire Friday night because of the dangers presented by the then-category-4 hurricane.

Cat 4 Hurricane Harvey Rips into Texas Coastal Bend

Hurricane Harvey crashed into the Texas coastal communities of Rockport and Fulton as a major Cat 4 storm causing widespread damage, injuries and power outages. Harvey slowly moved inland and by Saturday morning the storm weakened to Category 1. The storm roared into the Texas Coastal Bend with the eye making landfall late Friday night. About 10 p.m. reports began circulation about major damage to structures in the Rockport and Fulton communities and officials converted the Aransas County jail into a makeshift hospital, Rockport City Manager Kevin Carruth told reporters.
