Things got heated Wednesday on ESPN Radio’s “Dan Le Batard Show” between host Dan Le Batard and Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred.
Le Batard, whose show is based out of Miami, grilled Manfred over the recent ownership change for the Marlins that saw the team trade away 2017 NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton, as well as stars Dee Gordon and Marcell Ozuna for seemingly a poor return.
Manfred denied knowing the new ownership group, led by Derek Jeter and Bruce Sherman, planned to trade the big name players to slash payroll at the time of buying the team, which is when Le Batard accused the MLB commissioner of lying.
“You’re coming on here and saying you weren’t aware of Jeter’s plan to trade players and slash payroll?” Le Batard asked Manfred. “We’re starting with a lie, Rob! That’s where we’re starting! You can’t tell me you’re not aware of that!”
“I’m not going to sit here and have you call me a liar!” Manfred responded.
The two continued going back and forth over the issue, with Manfred maintaining he did not know from the beginning that the new Marlins ownership planned to dismantle the team.
