New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has done an about-face on the question of whether the terror attacks in New York and New Jersey could be linked to international terrorism.
On Sunday morning, Cuomo told reporters: “At this time there is no evidence of international terrorism connection with this incident.” But the New York Democrat may have spoken too soon. On Monday morning, Cuomo told CNN’s New Day: “I would not be surprised if we do find a foreign connection to the act.”
Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and the media had criticized Republican nominee Donald Trump for calling the New York attack a “bomb” on Saturday while investigations were still ongoing (even though Clinton herself used the term “bombings” to describe the attacks). However, they are now backtracking after initial efforts to deny what the attacks might have been. (New York City mayor Bill de Blasio had even said that the explosions, while intentional, were not “terrorism.”)
The FBI is now seeking Ahmad Khan Rahami, a 28-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in Afghanistan in 1988, in connection with the New York City bombing in the Chelsea neighborhood on Saturday evening. According to an FBI press release, “Rahami is a 28-year-old United States citizen of Afghan descent born on January 23, 1988, in Afghanistan. His last known address was in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He is about 5’ 6” tall and weighs approximately 200 pounds. Rahami has brown hair, brown eyes, and brown facial hair.” He is also to be considered “armed and dangerous,” the FBI warned in its release.
Law enforcement detonated a package early Monday morning at a train station in Elizabeth that contained several bombs.
