A homeless man named Matthew Hay-Chapman may receive $140,000 in reward money after recognizing dangerous jail escapees whose photos he first saw on the Drudge Report.
The two escapees–Hossein Nayeri and Jonathan Tieu–had been on the loose since January 22.
On January 30, Hay-Chapman spotted the van they were using, thereby leading to their capture.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Hay-Chapman said at 9 a.m. on January 30, he drank his coffee at a local McDonald’s, then headed to Whole Foods to use the restroom “because they have a nicer restroom.” On the way back from Whole Foods, he stopped where a group of newspaper vending machines stood “to read the Chronicle.”
While he was reading the Chronicle, he noticed a van with heavy condensation on the windows. Hay-Chapman stressed that he notices vans because he used to live in one.
As he looked at the van he noticed there were no plates on the back “and there were two missing stickers.” He remembered the news about “the wanted fugitives escaped from a jail in Santa Ana, and [those] guys sounded really bad and evil.”
Then, he told the Chronicle, “boom, this guy pops out of the van” and Hay-Chapman recognized him.
Hay-Chapman says, “I’d seen him in the news. Actually, on the Drudge Report–that’s where I saw the photograph of this man.” He altered authorities, and may collect a $140,000 reward.
Hossein Nayeri and Jonathan Tieu were taken into custody later that morning.
