California cops have arrested narco singer and NBC Universo reality star Larry Hernandez on kidnapping charges.
Police officers in Ontario California’s airport arrested Hernandez on a warrant charging him with kidnapping tied to an ongoing kidnapping case, Univision reported.
Hernandez has been a regional Mexican music performer in the genre known as “banda” where brass instruments provide a polka-like tune to catchy lyrics; the music has traditionally been widely popular in the Mexican states of Sinaloa, Durango and Sonora.
In recent years “banda” music further changed when performers began to turn the party-like music into a darker genre known as narco-corridos. That genre took the traditional song that told the stories of Mexican folk heroes and began to sing about Mexican drug lords in a way that glamorized a fantasy lifestyle filled with fast money, fast women, fast cars and many weapons.
Hernandez, one of the leading narco singers in Mexico and the U.S., became an international star after his reality show Larrymania began to air on NBC’s Mun2 which then became NBC Universo.
The charges against the narco singer come from an ongoing investigation in Newberry South Carolina where a man only identified as Roberto claimed that Hernandez and two henchmen beat a relative over a money dispute.
The dispute deals with the money owned for an appearance by Hernandez at a concert where Roberto was to pay him around $14,000 but the singer wanted $30,000. In order to make sure that the Roberto came back with the money Hernandez is said to have held one of his relatives, tied him up, placed him inside bags and beat him multiple times until the money was paid.
The investigation into the August 27 kidnapping was originally reported by Al Rojo Vivo and then also by Mexico’s La Opinion.
