NYT Still Pushing ‘Disarmed NRA Conventioners’ Myth Five Days Later

On April 10–five days after myths about a gun ban at the NRA convention popped up and were exposed as false–the New York Times published a piece reiterating the gun ban claim and suggesting it is happening without “the familiar complaint about infringing supposedly sacrosanct Second Amendment rights.”

Breitbart News previously reported that concealed carry is allowed at the NRA convention everywhere that concealed is allowed by state law and local policy. This means concealed carry-loaded handguns are allowed in the Music City Center but not at events in Bridgestone arena.

The ban on concealed carry in Bridgestone arena is not an NRA ban but a local policy.

Nevertheless, NYT reports:

After all the N.R.A. propaganda about how ‘good guys with guns’ are needed to be on guard across American life, from elementary schools to workplaces, the weekend’s gathering of disarmed conventioneers seems the ultimate in hypocrisy.

Again, the NRA convention will be full of good guys with guns. As Breitbart News reported on April 9, even NPR called out news outlets and gun control groups for saying otherwise.

Now, it is true that display guns will have their firing pins removed, thereby rendering them inoperable. But the goal there is to ensure that the weapons cannot be commandeered by someone with bad intent and used against innocents in a crowded area.

Why would the NYT mock this move?

The “Disarmed NRA Conventioners” myth is not as old as the “right wing conspiracy” myth or the “Ronald Reagan can never defeat the Soviet Union” myth, yet it is equally as appalling and equally as wrong.

Breitbart News reached out to the NYT for comment on their claims and received notification that they have corrected their piece. But the corrected version still contains the line, “So far, there has been none of the familiar complaint about infringing supposedly sacrosanct Second Amendment rights.” And it points to a ban on carrying firearms “in one of the main convention venues” but does not mention that such limits are a reflection of state law and/or local policy, not an NRA prerogative.

So the piece, although corrected, still intimates that carry policies at the NRA convention “may run counter to the N.R.A.’s ideas about carrying guns everywhere, from elementary schools to workplaces.”
