La Opinion, the daily Spanish-language publication in Southern California, ripped opponents of President Barack Obama’s executive amnesty this week, warning that Republicans at the national level will “suffer the same backlash” Republicans in California did after Proposition 187 passed in the 1990s.
“This is a triumph for those who believe that exploiting and deporting undocumented people is a priority,” the publication opined of the federal judge’s injunction against Obama’s executive amnesty. “We cannot ignore the fact that this represents a defeat in the debate on presidential power. Aside from humiliating President Obama, the ruling destroys the future of millions of people.”
La Opinion declared that the injunction that a federal judge issued last week against Obama’s executive amnesty is “a victory for those who think–based on fear, stereotypes and ignorance,–that legalizing the status of undocumented people will drain the U.S. treasury.”
“This is the time for Latino voters to take a look around them and see who is celebrating this ruling, who denounces it and who looks the other way. There is no middle ground here or room for benevolent interpretations,” La Opinion declared. “The impact of this verdict is temporary, as there is still much to resolve, but the indignation it has provoked and the animosity against those who promoted it and are now celebrating will remain for a long time.”
The publication continued by emphasizing that, “We cannot forget those soulless and ignorant people who believe that they are doing the country a favor by destroying working families.”
Last week, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) said there would be an unprecedented “militancy” among Latinos that will translate into votes against anti-amnesty Republicans. La Raza President Janet Murguia also predicted an increase in activism among Latinos after the executive amnesty injunction.
