Sky News, a British news channel, cut short a live interview with a former Charlie Hebdo editor after she held a copy of the latest issue before the camera.
Caroline Fourest is a French feminist and former editor of Charlie Hebdo. During an interview with Sky News this morning, Fourest said, “I’m very sad, very sad that journalists in the UK do not support us, that journalists in UK betray what journalism is about by thinking that people can not be grown enough to decide if a drawing is offending or not because you’re not even showing it.”
At that point, Fourest reached down and picked up a copy of the current issue, featuring a Mohammed cartoon. As she held it up, the camera quickly backed away and tilted toward the ceiling to avoid showing the full cover. At this point, a Sky News anchor broke in and apologized to viewers.
Fourest tweeted her reaction to the interruption shortly after it happened:
Fourest has repeatedly criticized news outlets that refuse to publish or show the cartoons in solidarity with Charlie Hebdo’s stand for free speech. In an earlier interview with The Scotsman, Fourest said, “There are many newspapers who are not protecting us.”
