The left-wing blogosphere responded angrily over the Girl Scout “cookiecott” announced Wednesday by Breitbart News.
Mother Jones called the boycott “bullying” even though its being run by a group so small they do not even have to file tax returns and is going up against what would be considered a major corporation if their $700 million was not generated by a non-profit.
Blogger Maddie Oatman was truly flummoxed that anyone could think the Girl Scouts should not be promoting pro-abortion advocates like Wendy Davis, Kathleen Sibelius, or Gloria Steinem or groups like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the National Organization for Women (NOW).
She noticed the Girl Scout non-apology apology over the Wendy Davis tweet and wrote, “the bullying seems to have worked…”
Jezebel said the boycott is about how someone at the Girl Scouts “could’ve conceivably obliquely hinted that Wendy Davis isn’t literally Satan.” She claimed the effort is about “attempting to punish a bunch of 10-year-olds over some bullshit controversy…”
Author Kelly Faircloth went on to say, “A spokesman also confirmed to us that no, this was not a fucking endorsement of Wendy Davis,” but then wants you to know that no one at the Girl Scouts actually used the F-word. That’s all Kelly.
She pooh-poohed “persistent rumors that Girl Scouts has some sort of official national relationship with Planned Parenthood…”
Think Progress was on the case, too, taking the Girl Scout line that they are absolutely, 100% neutral on abortion: “In reality, Girl Scouts USA takes no official position on either abortion or birth control. Organization officials repeatedly emphasize that these are topics best discussed between girls and their parents”–even though the Girl Scouts routinely give awards to women who run abortion clinics and at least one person on their staff came straight from abortion advocacy groups.
The Girl Scouts CEO even went on national TV during the first cookie boycott and admitted the Girl Scouts work with Planned Parenthood.
It seems to have been a good day for John Pisciotta’s campaign to reform the Girl Scouts through a cookie boycott. The story at Breitbart News announcing the boycott, as of this writing, has had 47,000 Facebook shares, and Pisciotta tells us he has done a raft of radio interviews.
