In his unending quest to find reasons to call Republicans racist, Chris Matthews of MSNBC stumbled Monday night onto yet another example of GOP bigotry: Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), a Hispanic, returning to Texas and stating, “Gee, it’s great to be back in America.”
That innocuous joke set off the irascible Matthews, who proceeded to suggest that by saying that Washington, D.C. was not America, Cruz was secretly saying that blacks and Hispanics aren’t American. Here’s Matthews:
Let me start tonight with this. It’s a little weird, but is Chicago part of America? Is Philadelphia my hometown where I’m going to address the National Constitution Center tomorrow — is Philly part of America? Is L.A.? Is San Francisco? Is Austin, Texas? …. This “We’re Americans, we white people out here in Texas, as opposed to people who live in the big cities: the ethnics, the blacks, the browns. Those people in Washington, those liberals, they’re not Americans.” This guy either has a total lack of understanding of American history and the hell we went through in the McCarthy period, or he knows it damn well and is playing that card.
In the past two weeks, Matthews has also labeled black holes and the word “we” racist when used by conservatives.
