On Friday, in the aftermath of the government shutdown, the Washington Post ran a sob story about one furloughed federal employee, Sophia Casey, dealing with her backlog of emails. After over 200 stories lamenting the fate of victims of the government shutdown, now the Post featured a victim of the end of the government shutdown:
There were a few times in recent weeks when Sophia Casey found herself mindlessly walking toward her laptop, ready to scan for new work messages as she’s always done at nights and on weekends.
Then she would see the computer — powered down, closed and unplugged. And she’d remember: furlough.
But poor Sophia would be reinstated soon enough, and she would find 1,563 emails waiting for her. “Just looking at them started to give her ‘a little headache over my right eyeball,’ so she got up and walked away,” the Post reported. How did she deal with this exigency?
She worked from home Thursday to ease herself back into the grind. As soon as she logged on, she fired off an e-mail of her own.
Her most pressing order of business: a request for vacation time.
Those heroic federal workers. Constantly worried about serving the public. And another vacation after a two-week paid vacation.
