Tuesday marked the 123rd birthday of Yosemite National Park, prompting Google to feature a graphic of the park – and, not coincidentally, to remind Americans that Yosemite is closed thanks to the government shutdown. The first results that pop up on Google are stories about the shutdown. There have been many other notable events on October 1 in American history: in 1903, the Boston Americans played the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first game of the first modern World Series; Ford marketed the Model T; Walt Disney World opened. None were considered as important as featuring Yosemite on the day of the shutdown.
