Ana Marie Cox, columnist for The Guardian and anal sex aficionado, has some serious objections to Mark Levin’s The Liberty Amendments. Her article, titled “1776 and all that: the mysterious appeal of Mark Levin’s originalist fantasy,” suggests that Levin’s project to amend the Constitution to restore it to its original balance of powers, is “insanity.” She points out the difficulty of passing Constitutional amendments, which Levin openly acknowledges. But then she gets to her real project: suggesting that the founders didn’t matter, and that there is no real problem with the progressive perversion of the Constitutional order.
“The meat of his proposals would be, I think, just as unpalatable to their view of the constitution as a broad outline for governance, one more inclined to negative than positive prescriptions,” Cox wrote. Of course, Cox’s version of Constitutional government involves government involvement in every area of American’s lives, a concept the founders fought, bled, and died to oppose. And her defense of her picture of founding ideals lasted a full two paragraphs before she suggested that the Constitution makes America into a Jim Crow nation: “Levin may be able to muster Federalist Paper-footnoted arguments for term limits for supreme court justices, a national voter ID law, and the strengthening of states’ ability to override federal law and supreme court decisions, but the real-world impact of such amendments would be to turn America back toward the Federalist era in terms of civil rights as well.”
Levin shot back via Facebook in a post titled: “Ana Marie Cox, dumb as they get.” He wrote:
Former national correspondent for the now defunct Air America rants against The Liberty Amendments without addressing a single substantive argument – either relating to the state of the nation or reforms to address it. But she does manage to attack old white people (do they get any whiter than this woman, by the way?). This may explain why she’s had so many jobs, bouncing from one left-wing zombie outlet to another. Reading comprehension and rational debate elude her. I will address this, and her, on tomorrow’s show. Should be fun! Have your copy of The Liberty Amendments at the ready!
