O’Reilly Factor producer Jesse Watters sat in on the panel on Fox News’ The Five Monday and discussed Oprah Winfrey’s recent comparison of Trayvon Martin to civil rights martyr Emmett Till.
Trayvon Martin, parallel to Emmett Till,” Oprah told The Grio’s Chris Witherspoon. “Let me just tell you, in my mind, same thing. But you can stuck in that and not allow yourself to move forward and to see how far we’ve come.
As a reminder, Emmett Till’s story doesn’t exactly follow the Trayvon narrative:
On August 28, 1955, 14-year-old Emmett Till was savagely beaten and shot through the head in Money, Mississippi, all for the crime of speaking to a 21-year-old white woman. After a widely covered trial, his murderers were acquitted — leading to national indignation and helping to catalyze the civil rights movement.
Watters called the comparison “atrocious” and said it was a “missed opportunity” to move the country forward on race issues. Further, he said the media mogul, worth $2.7 billion, “diminished her brand here. It was a big missed opportunity for Oprah Winfrey. I was expecting her to kind of take the high road and elevate the conversation and to bring the country forward and add a little unity here. But instead she made this atrocious analogy and I am a little disappointed in Oprah.”
