Ms. Magazine is following Heidi Yewman as she carries a gun for a month to prove how lenient gun laws are.
Titled, “My Month With A Gun,” Yewman writes:
Following the Newtown massacre in December, the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre, told the country: “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” I wondered what it would be like to be that good guy with a gun? What would it be like to get that gun, live with that gun, be out and about with that gun.
To that end, Yewman bought a Glock 9mm after shopping around, and made sure to emphasis that actually buying the gun from a dealer only took 7 minutes. She also obtained a license to carry a gun in her state and made sure to stress that it involved fingerprints and a background check, and only cost $56.50.
She then carried her gun into Starbucks–the very chain of stores she became infamous for protesting in 2010, when she protested their gun friendly policies. Now she writes as the one carrying a gun in their store, and all other places she can legally carry a gun.
And what does she blog? She blogs that it makes her “fearful” to be packing a gun on her hip in a place where there are children.
Although Yewman’s goal is nefarious, what she’s actually done is show that law-abiding citizens go through a number of steps in order to exercise their constitutional right to keep and bear arms. This includes the check they go through when buying a gun from a dealer and the background check she went through to get her concealed carry license.
The FBI does the background checks.
