Newspaper reporter is the worst job in America according to a survey by CareerCast.com. “I had aspirations to get bigger and better newspaper jobs, but the opportunity to climb the ladder disappeared as newspapers cut back, which was very discouraging,” said Rochelle Gilken, reporter for the Palm Beach Post. “I always wanted to travel to cover the big stories, like the Olympics, but the money to allow for that just wasn’t there and wasn’t coming back.”
The career website ranked 200 jobs from best to worst based on five criteria: physical demands, work environment, income, stress, and hiring outlook. The firm used data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and other government agencies to determine the rankings.
Meanwhile, the cost of journalism schools continues to rise with students questioning why they’re paying so much for an advanced degree in a career with so little upside.
