WaPo Reports Month-Old Menendez FBI Investigation Story as Breaking News

A month after everyone else confirmed the FBI was investigating New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez for allegedly soliciting prostitutes in the Dominican Republic, the Washington Post ran a Friday night story confirming the existence of the investigation.

The piece from Post writers Carol Leonnig and Peter Wallsten added nothing new to what has already been reported by both new media and mainstream media outlets. Nonetheless, the Post scribes were finally able to confirm the investigation exists for themselves.

“A team of FBI agents has been conducting interviews in recent weeks in the Dominican Republic and the United States, looking into allegations that Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) patronized prostitutes in the Caribbean nation, but has found no evidence to support the claim, according to two people familiar with the investigation,” they wrote.

One person said agents have asked about whether a Florida eye doctor — a close friend and major campaign donor to Menendez — provided the senator with prostitutes on vacations there. Another person said investigators are looking into allegations involving underage prostitutes and sex parties.

Leonnig and Wallsten went on to re-confirm many other already-reported details: how Democratic Party mega-donor Dr. Salomon Melgen is under investigation for alleged Medicare fraud, and how there are women who were at one time on Melgen’s payroll for questionable roles.

The Post thought so highly of their non-news story, though, that they blasted it out in a breaking news email alert to all of their web subscribers.
