In yet another Daily Beast column that trains her fire on the Right, Meghan McCain hits Republicans with yet another set of MSNBC talking points that she swears are only for our own good. But this time she’s making threats: “If I don’t see some changes in the next four years, I’m going to consider registering as an Independent in 2016.”
Oh, no.
Not that.
Meghan McCain is the pampered 27 year-old daughter of a wealthy United States senator whose closest brush with anything involving the real world was the MTV reality series. But still she’s given a high-profile platform that she uses — never to tell any truth that might offend the left — but only to smugly lecture On High about everything she’s sure is wrong with a Republican Party she obviously despises.
The worst people in our political world aren’t leftists or even the dregs of the mainstream media; the worst people in our political world are the sanctimonious mercenaries who pose as Republicans in order to make a comfortable living destroying and marginalizing Republicans within the warm bubbled embrace of the mainstream media
And Meghan McCain is the worst of the worst. At least David Frum and Joe Scarborough are self-made back-stabbers. But to be lectured to by someone whom everyone knows would have no platform whatsoever were it not for an accident of birth is just too much to bear.
I resent the hell out of it — I really do. And I don’t even like responding to her, because it feels like taking bait. But it’s a slow news day, so why not?
But where to begin…? I know, let’s warm up with me-me-me-me-me-me-me. Because everything is always and only ever about Ms. Meghan McCain: [emphasis added]
I know there are many out there, especially in the more conservative sphere, that regard me with disdain. I don’t fit into the traditional Republican box that the wingnuts who have hijacked my party think all Republicans should. For the last four years, I’ve been calling for Republicans to stop concentrating on social issues. I am a single woman in my 20s and that fact alone gave me the perspective that I don’t want to regulate a woman’s right to choice. I am pro-life, but because life is complicated, that choice is between a woman and her idea of a higher power. I believe if Roe vs. Wade were repealed, abortion would still go on. I care more about my economy, national security, and fiscal conservatism than I do about what other woman do with their bodies. It’s not my place, and I don’t believe it’s the government’s place, to make such decisions.
That’s just one paragraph. If you highlighted every self-reference in the entire piece you’d get carpal tunnel.
But what really drives me crazy is The Dumb.
For starters, Ms. McCain, you’re not pro-life. No matter the reasoning behind it, if you believe women should have access to legalized abortion, you’re pro-choice. Saying you’re “pro-life” in the same sentence in which you defend “choice” is like saying you’re a Republican when you only leverage nepotism to parrot MSNBC talking points.
You might not like the fact that, in the lexicon of American politics, “pro-life” means opposing abortion, just like I don’t like the fact that American princesses are allowed to make a good living as writers even though they start every other paragraph with the word “I,” — but these are the realities of the world in which we live. Please be so good as to acknowledge them.
But look at how dangerously ignorant or intentionally undermining McCain is. She presumes to lecture us about expanding the party by advising us to back legalized abortion, drop our opposition to same-sex marriage, and tell the Tea Party to go pound sand.
Math is hard.
Or maybe no one’s told Ms. McCain that there just aren’t enough 27-year-old narcissists to make up for the loss of the tens of millions who make up a little thing I like to call … The GOP Base.
The thickness somehow gets thicker as Ms. McCain dreams of a political organization that puts social issues aside and concentrates only on “fiscal conservatism” — you know, like the Tea Party.
To be fair, like a broken clock wearing a tiara, Ms. McCain isn’t wrong about everything. The dilemma, though, is that if we make some changes, she might not leave. There’s no question she’s correct that Republicans need to get smarter about immigration. But is it really worth fixing what needs to be fixed if the consequence is Meghan McCain remaining a Republican?
Four years of President Hillary Clinton or four more years of Meghan McCain?
Let me sleep on that one.
Dear Ms. McCain:
If you really want to help the GOP, don’t threaten to go — go.
Just go.
Get out.
So long. Farewell. Bon voyage. Arrivederci. Hasta good riddance.
Yes, there’s all kinds of room in the GOP for self-criticism. We welcome debate, criticism, self-reflection, and argument. We know it’s good for us. But what’s intolerable are those Vichy Republicans who dine off attacking us amongst our media enemies but are too cowardly and comfortable to lift a finger to fight for us — to even push back against every false premise their generous hosts serve up.
It’s not your criticism that earns our ire, it’s your relentless undermining cowardice.
So, please, just go.
Why stay where you’re not wanted?
