Politico hasn’t cared about the cost of First Lady Michelle Obama’s wardrobe for the past three-and-a-half years but now their sartorial interest is piqued due to Ann Romney’s entry into the presidential arena. Earlier this afternoon Politico devoted an entire page to Ann Romney’s blouse.
I’m serious. Read the below in your best Derek Zoolander voice:
The bird print top, made by Reed Krakoff costs $990, a saleswoman at the designer’s store in Manhattan told Styleite. The piece is part of the Krakoff’s spring 2012 ready-to-wear collection.
A publicist for the line told ABC News that they “had nothing to do with” Romney wearing the item. “She must have bought it from Saks or Bergdorf’s, we definitely didn’t send it to her,” she said.Romney wore the shirt (but not the matching pants made to go with it) during an appearance on “CBS This Morning” with her husband, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
Politico also quoted a former Obama campaign staffer who reiterated the importance of not attacking Ann Romney since they jacked it up so badly the last time. Since the campaign won’t, Politico will, under the guise that it’s of general interest that Ann Romney wore an off-the-rack Krakoff top. Don’t forget, Michelle Obama has quite the expensive wardrobe, too.
There’s the decadent jacket from NY-based designer Wes Gordon that will set you back over $2k.
During a visit with military members and their families FLOTUS wore this flirty Comme Des Garçons skirt:
She was spotted attending Easter services in Hawaii wearing a coveted Sophie Theallet dress that runs around $2k. I haven’t even touched the Alexander McQueen gowns (which the talented Sarah Burton designed) that FLOTUS has worn to state dinners or other events.
I don’t mind that the First Lady wears, and can afford to wear, couture or higher-end prêt-à-porter; I do mind the multiple, publicly-footed, expensive vacations. Let’s just please stop pretending that she’s “slumming it” at J Crew while Ann Romney is wearing $900 tops.
Politico wants you to desperately forget that the Obamas are millionaires and focus only on how the Romneys are millionaires. This is one battle they may want to discourage their surrogates in the media from waging, considering that the First Lady is a respected fashionista.
