Chris Matthews on MSNBC’s Hardball last week giggled with guests Alex Wagner of Politics Daily and Richard Wolffe as they tried to convince viewers that Christine O’Donnell is a “cute” candidate but her “claim to fame is ‘I don’t know nuthin’.'” Matthew’s remarked on O’Donnell’s “cuteness” and appeal and in the same breath called her a “deadbeat.” Amazing that an attack ad against O’Donnell can bring Matthews to the conclusion that O’Donnell is a “deadbeat” but Geithner is a person who we can thank for “saving” the economy.
Matthews continues to patronizingly call O’Donnell “irresistibly cute” and that her mannerisms are “attractive as hell” but is quick to remind his audience that she is brainless. What’s degrading to women in politics is not so much that Matthews calls her cute or finds her attractive, but it’s that he tries to fit her in the “brainless beauty box.” For example, he mentions how Sarah Palin is the same way. Incredibly, Matthews can’t seem to name any “cute” conservative women in politics that he also believes are intelligent.
Matthews shows an O’Donnell interview with CNN to his guests where she discusses the likelihood of President Obama vetoing any bill that repeals Obamacare. When O’Donnell hypothesizes that President Obama vetoing the hypothetical bill would “leave himself vulnerable” to a Hillary 2012 attack (which is not a totally outlandish idea), she cites that she’s seen Hillary ads in support of her conclusion. Matthews laughs off the entire notion and adds, “I don’t know where she’s seen those ads…” Breitbart.tv, CBS, Politico, and even Gawker seemed to find the ads on what’s known as the “Internet,” but the subject is strangely absent on the search engine on MSNBC, so I guess we can excuse Chris this once because it appears that MSNBC would not cover it. It’s also interesting that Matthews finds the whole idea of a Hillary 2012 run so outlandish this month when in August on Matthews’ Sunday panel they had a whole segment on Hillary running for President.
Matthews spends much of this segment trying to convince his audience that the conservative women in politics are nothing but brainless cuties. He concludes that the reason why O’Donnell is saying the things she does is because,”she’s made it this far just looping it, you know, just having fun.” He ignores the fact that these women have demonstrated enough intellectual prowess to defeat fierce competitors in primaries and general elections as well as appeal to large groups of Americans. After a good laugh at O’Donnell’s expense, Matthews asks Wolffe, “Does reality even matter anymore?” Clearly it doesn’t to Chris Matthews and it appears he likes “just having fun” degrading women.
