HOUSTON, Texas – A security guard working an overnight shift outside a closed convenience store was ambushed by a pair of armed gunmen early Monday morning.
Houston police investigators released a security video late on Monday from the store showing two masked gunmen sneaking up in the darkness on the security guard with their weapons at the ready. Moments later 71-year-old Saul Cruz would be dead.
The two men described by police as Hispanic males are seen in the video below sneaking up on the spot where Cruz was parked. It later shows the two men running away from the scene. One of the men was carrying what looked like a long-barrel pistol or a rifle with no stock. The second man was carrying a pistol.
Cruz was found slumped over his steering wheel and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a report by Click2Houston. The men fired several shots into Cruz’s marked security patrol car. After shooting, they robbed him and left him behind to die. All of this happened shortly before 5 a.m. Monday morning, according to the surveillance video. The entire ordeal lasted about seven minutes.
The security guard was routinely seen parked outside the Anderson Market located in southwest Houston. The local market hired the security company following a series of break-ins. Police said they do not know if the shooters are connected to those burglaries.
Neighbors seemed stuck with sadness at the news of Cruz’s cold-blooded murder. “I just don’t know why, man,” Joe Guidry told KHOU reporter Drew Karedes. Guidry said Cruz would “give people boosts, he’d watch out for you, wave, watch for you when you leave.”
The suspects were described by police as two Hispanic males who were wearing purple pants and hoodies. Both of the men had their faces covered with bandanas.
