MATAMOROS, Tamaulipas –Three innocent bystanders died after getting caught in the crossfire of a fierce firefight between rival cartel members in the most recent series of fierce firefights that have rocked this border city.
Once again the streets of Matamoros were painted in red this week when a vehicle pursuit and a gun battle led to a gruesome car wreck in the city’s southwest side near the Sendero Nacional highway.
The shootouts killed three bystanders who have been identified as a 29-year-old housewife and mother, a man who worked at a daycare and another man who worked in a recycling plant.
According to witness testimonies the victims were pinned down during the shootout and were not able to escape the deadly gun battle about which Tamaulipas State officials have yet to release any official information.
During the firefight and pursuit it is believed that the gunmen riding in a red Expedition died. The gunmen were trying to flee a squad of Mexican marines when they crashed into several other vehicles.
The information provided through citizen journalists using social media point to the shootout starting shortly after noon along Sendero Nacional highway near a daycare center called Angeles Del Universo or Angels of the Universe.
While the information was widely disseminated among the community through social media, the local newspapers and TV stations remained quiet.
The rolling shootout ended in a pileup involving multiple cars one of which ended upside down. After the firefight and crash, military forces kept the Sendero Nacional highway blocked for several hours as they removed the vehicles and tended to an unknown number of injured bystanders.
