A new report published by the New York Times detailed the chaotic turn that American campuses took in the past week as administrators told students to leave campus in response to the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak. Some students from low-income families told reporters that they are unsure if they can afford a flight home.

According to a report by the New York Times, students at universities and colleges around the country are panicking over decisions to shut down their campuses in response to the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak.

Breitbart News reported this week that dozens of colleges and universities around the country have shut down their campuses to prevent the spread of the virus. Many institutions have even ordered students to leave campus and return home.

The New York Times report detailed the concerns of students that fear that campus shutdowns may leave them stranded. Some students said that they could not afford a flight home. Others expressed concern that they might unknowingly spread the virus to older relatives that they live with at home.

Low-income students wondered whether they could afford to go home. International students had questions about their visas, which usually did not permit online learning. Graduate students worried about the effects on research projects years in the making.

Dance, theater and music students fretted that after months of rehearsals there would be no performances. Seniors were already mourning their commencement, assuming that it, too, would be canceled, and that the Class of 2020 might be together for the last time.

Some altruistically minded students worried about going home and perhaps unwittingly infecting their older and more vulnerable parents and grandparents should the virus already be present at their schools.

Breitbart News reported this week that students at the University of Dayton rioted after being told that their campus was being shut down as a precautionary measure against the spread of the virus. Local police officers were forced to equip themselves with riot gear to respond to the student protesters.
