Gibson’s Bakery Claims Oberlin College Is Stalling for Business Owner’s Death

The owner of Gibson’s Bakery, which won a multi-million dollar legal verdict in a defamation case against Oberlin College, claims that the college is now waiting for the bakery’s owner to die from his recent cancer diagnosis before moving forward with an appeal.

Gibson’s Bakery owner Dave Gibson published an emotional appeal to his followers on Facebook this week in which he claimed that there might be a reason why Oberlin Colleger has yet to file an appeal in their defamation case against the bakery. The reason? Because they are waiting for Gibson, who was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, to die.

“As we’ve been going through this legal battle, I’ve been going through another personal battle. Late last year, I was diagnosed with the devastating news that I have pancreatic cancer,” Gibson says in the video. “Oberlin College has known about my health condition since February. Their legal team filed a motion to prevent any mention of my cancer diagnosis at the trial. And honestly, we agreed, because I wanted the jury to decide this case on the facts alone — nothing else.”

The video, which was highlighted this week by Campus Reform, was posted to Gibson’s Bakery’s Facebook page. Gibson’s Bakery recently won a massive multi-million dollar verdict against Oberlin College for the college’s role in smearing the bakery as racist. In November 2016, three black Oberlin students were arrested after assaulting a white shopkeeper at Gibson’s Bakery. The students pled guilty both to shoplifting and assault. They even admitted as a part of their plea agreement that race played no role in the altercation at the bakery. Nevertheless, Oberlin College administrators aided students in a long campaign that portrayed the bakery as racist.

In June, an Ohio jury awarded Gibson’s Bakery $44 million in total damages. Oberlin College has since refused to apologize to Gibson’s Bakery and claims that they will continue to fight the legal battle.
