A cafeteria worker at the University of Minnesota found herself on the receiving end of a “bias incident report” after she said “hello” to a student in Japanese. The student felt the worker’s greeting of “konnichiwa” was “racialized.”
According to a report by The College Fix, a food service worker at the University of Minnesota was reported to the administration after she said “hello” to a student in Japanese. The worker allegedly then asked the student where they were from. The student told the worker that they were from Wisconsin and left the cafeteria. At some point, the student filed a “bias incident report” against the cafeteria worker, writing that the cafeteria worker’s greeting of “konnichiwa” was “extremely vague and racialized.”
The report included several “bias incident” reports that were submitted by students. One student submitted a report over an “offensive” Halloween costume. Another student filed a complaint because they were offended by a group of students praying in the campus library.
· A complaint was filed over an offensive Halloween costume at a campus departmental party. It was suggested that the department be made to undergo diversity training. The costume is not described in the document provided by the university.
· A complaint was filed after a campus group was found praying in a public space in a campus library. The incident was logged, and “support” was offered for the students who filed the complaint. The religious denomination of the praying students was not provided in the university’s document.
· Someone complained that there were no gender neutral restrooms in Tate Hall, although there were available restrooms marked “family restrooms.” The complainant believed that this was “awkward and not welcoming for gender non-conforming, non-binary folks seeking a gender neutral restroom.”
Breitbart News has reported extensively on the rise of “bias incident” reporting systems around the country. Earlier this month, Breitbart News reported on the “bias incident” system at the University of Illinois, which received a report because a guest said that “America is the greatest country in the world.”
