The University of North Carolina, Charlotte, has wiped a “white consciousness” workshop for white students from its website after backlash from both sides of the political spectrum.
Officials at UNC Charlotte have canceled a “white consciousness” workshop it sparked a backlash. The event, which was originally intended for white students only, aimed to help the students better understand their privilege.
“Understanding white privilege and engaging in anti-racist practice is crucial in creating racial equity,” the event description reads. “This space is for white students at UNC Charlotte who are interested in engaging in conversations to assist in their understanding of Whiteness. It is intended to be group-based, meaning we would love for participants to attend all sessions.”
Following a backlash, the university removed the event from its website. A report from The College Fix on Thursday revealed that the workshop is being retooled to include non-white students. A representative for the event said in a comment that the school “looked at the wording of how that event was described and…determined that we were not clear and precise in that language,” the representative said. “What we have done is removed it so that we can clarify that it is not exclusive to white individuals.” The event has yet to be rescheduled.
UNC Charlotte has quite a few “social justice” themed events. This week, Breitbart News reported on the school’s “Inclusivity Mixer” event, which bizarrely implies that that networking events at the university are typically exclusionary.
“The Inclusivity Mixer is the premiere diversity recruiting event at UNC Charlotte. The event welcomes all applicants and hopes to encourage inclusivity and diversity no matter the ethnicity, citizenship, national origin, race, gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, disability, socio-economic status, special abilities, political and social philosophy and religion,” the event description reads.
