Investors in Tesla have reportedly become worried about CEO Elon Musk’s recent actions after Musk called a British diving hero who assisted in the rescue of the Thai soccer team a “pedo.”
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has come under fire recently for his comments about Vernon Unsworth, one of the British divers who saved a Thai soccer team stuck in an underwater cave. Musk took to Twitter where he called Unsworth “pedo guy” saying: “You know what, don’t bother showing the video. We will make one of the mini-sub/pod going all the way to Cave 5 no problemo. Sorry pedo guy, you really did ask for it.”
Musk’s comments were in response to an interview in which Unsworth stated: “He can stick his submarine where it hurts. It had absolutely no chance of working. He had no conception of what the cave passage was like. The submarine, I believe, was about five foot six long, rigid, so it wouldn’t have gone round corners or round any obstacles. It wouldn’t have made the first 50 metres into the cave from the dive start point. Just a PR stunt.”
Now, Tesla investors have become worried about how Musk’s comments could affect his companies. Gordon Johnson, the managing director of Vertical Group, a new-york based investment research group told the Washington Post: “This thing is unraveling. You had a very big shareholder last week say they want him to focus on executing and stop with the tweets — and then, this weekend, you get more tweets. What’s his angle? What is he doing? … He keeps promising all of these things, and he keeps missing, and he’s not being held to task.”
Johnson is referencing comments made by tesla’s fourth-largest shareholder, who urged Musk for “a time of quiet and peace,” four days before Musk attacked Unsworth via Twitter. Gene Munster, an analyst for Loup Ventures, said that Musk’s latest comments bring his credibility into question. “This crossed a line, and it needs to stop,” he said. “They have such a great story to tell, and it’s getting lost in this noise.”
Kevin Holland, the managing director of British renewable-energy installing company Solar Shed said his company would no longer promote Musk’s products until Musk gives Unsworth a “full & public apology … regarding his disgusting comments to a real hero.” Holland further stated:“He’s an inspiration to so many by virtue of some extremely clever PR over the years and needs to remember that he is a role model. Role models do not call people [pedophiles] on Twitter because they had an idea that wouldn’t work.”
