Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) slammed corporate virtue signaling, calling out Facebook and Citigroup for making themselves “arbiters of Americans’ constitutional rights” at a committee hearing yesterday.
Speaking at a hearing of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, Scott drew attention to corporate America’s recent attempts to impose left-wing values on society, including Citigroup’s refusal to do business with clients that don’t agree to abide by progressive gun control measures, and Facebook’s censorship of the pro-Trump internet personalities Diamond and Silk.
“Last week it was Citigroup, deciding that they don’t like the Second Amendment, so they’re going to punish business owners. And now we have Facebook deciding that Diamond and Silk do not have the right to speak, and the right to the first amendment.”
“Facebook’s support of freedom of speech seems to only include liberal speech … Some people might say that Facebook is a private company – and that’s true! But Facebook is no ordinary tech company.”
“In fact, it’s no ordinary company, regardless of the industry. Tens of millions of Americans share huge amounts of their personal lives on this platform, a platform that I might add, often defends itself using the first amendment — but doesn’t seem to care about those policies for their users.”
