A Snapchat employee claimed that a “next wave” of layoffs is imminent at the embattled social media company, in a message posted on the pseudonymous app Blind.
Blind is an app that allows workers at tech companies and other corporations to confidentially discuss their workplaces. Users sign up with a work email, which allows Blind to verify their workplace, but are not obliged to use their real name on the platform.
Snapchat’s parent company recently announced layoffs of 100 employees from their engineering team. The Blind message was posted in the aftermath of those layoffs.
The company let a number of employees go in recent months. In January they laid off 22 employees and relocated members of their content team from New York to Los Angeles. Last October, 18 members of the company’s recruitment team were let go and approximately a dozen members of their hardware team left the company in September.
Snapchat was once seen as a potential competitor to Facebook. Last year, Facebook introduced Stories on Instagram, their image-sharing platform, which allows users to post images and videos that disappear within 24 hours. The move was widely perceived as an attempt to compete with Snapchat.
If Snapchat continues to struggle, it will be a further sign that Facebook and Facebook-owned companies now constitute a monopoly in social media.
