Uber Driver Charged in Sexual Assault of Teenager

Adding to the long list of Uber-related sexual assaults, another Uber driver has been charged with the rape of a 16-year-old girl in Gwinnett County, Georgia.

WSB-TV Atlanta reports that an Uber driver has been arrested and charged with the rape of a 16-year-old girl. The incident reportedly took place on Monday morning. The attacker was named as Abdoulie Jagne of College Park and was arrested on Thursday. He is currently being held at Gwinnett County jail.

The 16-year-old victim told investigators that she had been drinking at a bar with friends on Sunday night, then one of her friends called an Uber for the girl. She was picked up by Jagne who later allegedly assaulted her before dropping her off at her destination. Gwinnett Police Cpl. Michele Pihera said in a statement, “Once she was dropped off at the apartment complex she began banging on several of the homes in the neighborhood, and one of those residents called 911. One of those neighbors did notice that her pants were around her ankles.”

According to police the girl appeared to be extremely intoxicated, police are currently not aware of which bar the girl was drinking at but are still investigating as bar employees could face charges for serving a minor. “I think that she’ll make a full recovery physically. I can only imagine, emotionally, she’ll have a little bit longer of a recovery,” Pihera said.

Police stated that evidence that they received from Uber corroborate the girl’s claims, “We know that from the start location to the end location it should have taken a short amount of time, but based on the trip data it took even longer. Again, more corroboration to her story,” Pihera said. Investigators are now looking into whether or not anyone else has been assaulted by Jagne and have requested any victims to contact them as soon as possible.

Commenting on the case, Uber said in a statement, “What’s reported here is horrifying beyond words. Our thoughts are with the rider and her family during this time. This driver has been permanently removed from the app.”
