A resolution introduced by student groups at DePaul University seeks to slightly increase student costs in order to fund scholarships for illegal immigrants.
The resolution, which will be introduced led by the student groups Undocumented Student Movement (USM) and Undocumented Vincentians & Allies (UVA), will ask students whether or not they would be willing to pay “an extra $2 each quarter in student activity fees” to fund scholarships for illegal immigrants.
Some DePaul community members are asking why professors aren’t instead offering to take a small pay cut in order to fund the scholarships. Others have argued that preferential treatment should be given to American citizens.
DePaul College Republicans President John Minster questioned the university’s priorities. He argued that they should offer the scholarships to American citizens or look to find ways to lower tuition for students that are already struggling financially.
“Instead of using those tuition funds on actual legal American citizens, or perhaps even lowering tuition on the financially underwater student body” – students who have trouble paying for their educations – “they have chosen to promote another left-wing mascot at the behest of their own students,” Minster argued.
The referendum, which will be presented to DePaul students for a vote next week, can be read in its entirety below:
Each year, undocumented undergraduate students who do not have access to federal financial aid (FAFSA) undergo a financial gap often exceeding $17,000 (not including room and board).Should we support our fellow students who, like we, dream of obtaining an education from DePaul by creating a scholarship initiated by a $2 quarterly addition to our Student Activity Fee?
