Amazon’s new Echo Look contains a feature known as “Style Check” that will let strangers judge your outfits.
The $200 device allows professional stylists to judge your appearance, aided by “advanced machine learning.” This would, according to Amazon, increase the objectivity of the results.
Amazon explained in a statement just how the feature would work:
Submit two photos for a second opinion on which outfit looks best on you based on fit, color, styling, and current trends. Over time, these decisions get smarter through your feedback and input from our team of experienced fashion specialists.
The photos that are taken are then recorded and logged, creating a personal “lookbook” of all your different outfits, so you can remember just how something looks on you. You can also send any of the photos to your friends for their opinion as well.
This had lead some to argue that the device is quite “creepy.” Writing in Consumerist, Laura Northrup said that combining the Echo speaker with a camera would let the device “listen to everything that happens in your bedroom in addition to watching you get dressed.” With its ability to ask questions, Northrup quipped that “its answer to ‘who is the fairest of them all?’ is sure to be enlightening.”
