After WikiLeaks editor Julian Assange’s internet was cut off in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, a group of internet vigilantes have begun to organise meetings outside the embassy in an attempt to provide him with full access.
The groups were organised via the imageboard website 4chan, where people were told to turn up outside the embassy with their smartphones and provide internet to Assange, who is currently living there under asylum.
“We are now calling all BRITS to get their ass down to the embassy and stand around in mass, taking shifts with wifi-hotspots on hand! Give Assange constant network and morale support all while streaming it live for the world to see,” the post read.
Motherboard’s Ben Sullivan reports that when he turned up outside the embassy, he met a man named Marco, as well as a group of “seasoned Assange campaigners,” who had activated a hotspot, hoping Assange would have access to it.
“I’m trying to help. I’m trying to help by activating the hotspot. We’re hoping that [Assange] actually gets it, I haven’t seen so many people. I hope they’re just around,” the man told him.
“Unfortunately they are the cancer of the world, not the Americans but definitely the government and the political system. And this is actually the moment where something can happen,” he continued.
Assange’s organisation, WikiLeaks, claimed earlier this week that U.S Secretary of State John Kerry personally pressured the Ecuadorian government in order to prevent Assange from releasing further private emails from Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta.
