Republican frontrunner Donald Trump has vowed to use social media to fight against entrenched elites in politics and the media.
In a series of tweets that appeared to respond to news that establishment Republican donors were planning to launch a barrage of TV ads against the frontrunner, Trump said social media was the best way to fight “millions of dollars of fraudulent [TV] commercials.”
Trump drew attention to the fact that the candidates most often on TV were running lacklustre campaigns.
Trump also vowed to use social media to hammer “dishonest lightweight” Marco Rubio.
The presidential candidate’s tweetstorm followed a New York Times story reporting that anti-Trump Republicans had bought more than $10 million worth of TV ads to attack Trump in Florida, where the businessman hopes to defeat Marco Rubio in his home state. The anti-Trump groups funding the ads are reportedly the pro-Rubio super PAC Conservative Solutions and the American Futures Fund.
If Trump is serious about relying on social media over traditional media, he should be aware of both platforms’ growing bias against anti-establishment conservatives. Twitter’s track record of discrimination against conservative accounts grows more dire by the day, while Facebook, Google, and Twitter are all clamping down on criticism of migration from Muslim countries — a key element of Trump’s campaign.
