Video game streaming site Twitch has announced the launch of the Rocket League Championship Series in partnership with developer Psyonix.
On March 25th, registration will open for Rocket League’s grand debut on the eSports scene. Open qualifiers will allow any three-man team across North America and Europe to compete for a top four position in their respective region. Both regional qualifiers will come with a meaty $10,000 prize package in their “online finals” to decide what teams move forward. At the end of the planned three month first season, eight teams will slug it out at a live event for a cool $55,000 prize. The inaugural championship series will be open to both PlayStation 4 and PC via Steam.
It’s exciting to see more games making the jump into the eSports scene, and Rocket League is particularly well suited to the traditional format. The game is essentially soccer — or football, if you’re from Europe or fond of names for sports that make sense — with fanciful high-octane vehicles, and games are a wild mix of vehicular aerobatics alongside the sort of moment-by-moment tactical play that makes competitive events so addicting. Rocket League delivers both at a breakneck pace that will no doubt set it apart from the typically methodical play of the eSports MOBA game darlings.
