Anonymous has declared December 11th “ISIS Trolling Day.” The hackers call on web users to spend the day antagonizing, mocking, and disrupting the online propaganda of the Islamic State.
In a widely-shared document, Anonymous instructs supporters to post mocking photos, videos, jokes, and memes about ISIS on social media. On Twitter, they recommend “posting photos of goats while [messaging] ISIS members with captions talking about their wives.” They also suggest posting photos of dead ISIS members on hashtags commonly used by the Islamic militant group’s members and supporters.
In addition to disrupting existing ISIS hashtags, Anonymous hopes to gather enough support to trend the “#Daeshbags” hashtag on Twitter, a reference to an acronym of Islamic state’s Arabic name, which is seen as an insult by ISIS.
In addition to their plans on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube, Anonymous also wants their supporters to print out posters and stickers and plaster them around their localities. The group also urged non-web savvy users to get involved, saying “Do not think you have to be apart of Anonymous, anyone can do this and [it] does not require any special skills.”
This is the latest in the hacking movement’s ongoing “cyberwar” against ISIS, which we have previously covered on Breitbart Tech. Anonymous previously tracked down, reported, and suspended thousands of alleged ISIS-supporting groups on social media, and, in one attention-grabbing attack, defaced an Islamic State webpage with an advert for Viagra.
At least one Anonymous splinter group has criticised these tactics as unproductive, calling on hackers to infiltrate ISIS websites and social media networks instead of seeking to destroy them.
There are signs of political correctness in the latest push by Anonymous. Their call to arms instructs supporters to “print out pages showing how ISIS does not represent Islam.” The message also adds that “they do not stand for a religion, they do not stand for a god, they are brainwashers” who “[give] many a bad name.”
This mirrors the approach taken by national governments, including the United Kingdom, where Prime Minister David Cameron recently announced that the U.K. government would refer to the Islamic State as “Daesh rather than Isil because frankly this evil death cult is neither a true representation of Islam nor is it a state.”
Explaining their motivations for “ISIS Trolling Day,” Anonymous emphasised the need to demonstrate fearlessness. “We will show them that we are not afraid,we will not just hide in our fear, we are the majority and with our strength in numbers we can make a real difference. We will mock them for the idiots they are.”
ISIS Trolling Day is scheduled for 11 December.
