YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki stated in a recent interview with 60 Minutes that she limits the amount of time her children spend on YouTube. She also limits them to using the YouTube Kids app, which has repeatedly had trouble with inappropriate content in the past few years.
A woman from Gainesville, Florida, was shocked recently when she discovered videos featuring themes of suicide, school shootings and abuse on her child’s YouTube Kids app, which claims to feature a curated selection of YouTube content appropriate for kids.
81 percent of parents allow their children aged 11 and under to watch YouTube videos, while 34 percent claimed their children watch YouTube videos “regularly,” despite 61 percent of parents claiming to have encountered content “unsuitable for children” on the platform, according to a Pew Research survey.
Following multiple complaints about the content published on the YouTube Kids app, the company has decided to give parents better control over what their children view.
