Syria: Assad Declares Damascus Fully ‘Clear’ of Islamic State

Forces loyal to dictator Bashar al-Assad this week deemed Damascus and its countryside “completely clear” of Sunni jihadists, including the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL), an alleged victory that puts the territory in and around the Syrian regime’s seat of power under its full control for the first time since the civil war erupted in 2011.

Assad Begins Final Assault to Regain Complete Control of Damascus

Building on his recapture of the Eastern Ghouta suburb after a long and bloody siege that ended with an alleged chemical weapons attack, Syrian dictator Bashar Assad on Tuesday began the final battle for control of Damascus with artillery strikes on the last rebel positions near the city.

Reports: Russia Ships More Military Hardware to Syria

The UK Daily Mail reports that two Russian warships filled with military equipment – including BTR-80 tanks, high-speed patrol boats, and a Pelena-1 bomb radar system – have been sighted en route to Syria following Friday’s airstrikes on Syrian targets by the United States and its allies.

Delegates to Syria Peace Talks Heckle Russian Foreign Minister

The latest round of Russia-sponsored talks to end the Syrian civil war got off to a bad start on Tuesday as some opposition groups boycotted the meeting entirely, others refused to get off their airplanes, and some of the delegates who actually made it to the meeting heckled Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during his speech.
