Republican Wins Special Congressional Election in Kansas

Republican Ron Estes won Tuesday’s special election in the Fourth Congressional District of Kansas to replace the district’s former representative, Mike Pompeo, who was named earlier this year by President Trump to serve as Director of the CIA, the Associated Press reported late Tuesday.

CA Unions Lose Big in East Bay Special Election

California’s powerful unions lost a key special election this week in an all-Democrat race for State Senate in the East Bay that pitted a reformist candidate, Orinda Mayor Steve Glazer, against a reliable Big Labor vote, Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla. The race took place on what was nominally Republican turf, after State Sen. Mark DeSaulnier resigned. Heavy spending by independent groups on both sides–and the state’s new “jungle” primary–helped Glazer win 55%-45%.

Vietnamese Votes Beat Latino No-Shows in OC Supervisor Race

It turns out that who isn’t voting may have just as much, or more, to do with who wins an election that who does vote. Certainly that was the case in the recent special election in Orange County to fill the vacated First District Supervisor seat, created when Supervisor Janet Nguyen was elected last November to the California State Senate, vacating her county position.

Abbott Sets Special Election Date for Menéndez’s House Seat

Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) announced an expedited schedule on Wednesday evening for the special election to fill the recently vacated seat for Texas House District 124. The election will be on March 31, 2015. The district primarily represents western portions of San Antonio and Bexar County.

Texas Special Election Results Settle Four Legislative Seats

Special elections were held on Tuesday for four seats in the Texas Legislature: Senate District 26, where Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer (D-San Antonio) faces Rep. Jose Menendez (D-San Antonio); House District 13, where Carolyn Bilski (R) faces Leighton Schubert (R); House District 17, where John Cyrier (R) faces Brent Golemon (R), and House District 123, where Diego Bernal (D) faces Nunzio Previtera (R).
