SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Jesuit priest who presided over an inaugural Mass for President Joe Biden is under investigation for unspecified allegations and is on leave from his position as president of Santa Clara University in Northern California, according to a statement from the college’s board of trustees.
Santa Clara University apologized this week for the “hurt” caused by a “Blue Lives Matter” postcard owned by a campus security officer and visible in his office during a recent Zoom meeting. The Santa Clara College Republicans posted a statement from the university to social media stating that the Blue Lives Matter flag is “widely considered to be an effort to undermine the Black Lives Matter movement and its universally important goals.”
Administrators at Santa Clara University were forced to step in after student government leaders refused to grant official recognition to a conservative student organization. The Student government argued that the group would cause “emotional harm” to students.
Last week, Santa Clara University refused to recognize a conservative student organization for the third time. According to the university’s Vice Provost, the student government’s decision was “not motivated by the club’s ideological beliefs.”
