The Republican-controlled Texas Legislature passed a Convention of States Resolution, becoming the eleventh. Article V of the U.S. Constitution allows for a Convention of States to restrict the power of the federal government.
“For decades, the federal government has grown out of control. It has increasingly abandoned the Constitution, stiff-armed the states and ignored its citizens,” Texas Governor Greg Abbott told legislators and those gathered for his State of the State address on Tuesday. He declared legislation supporting an Article V Convention of States to be an emergency item for the session.
“Last year, more than 100 children died in our Child Protective System. You can vote to end that,” said Texas Governor Greg Abbott during his State of the State Address on Tuesday.
Three Republican Texas state legislators pre-filed legislation on Tuesday that if passed, would make the Lone Star State the eighth state to call for an Article V convention of states.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill on Tuesday designating a segment of U.S. Hwy 287 in Midlothian as the “Chris Kyle Memorial Highway.” Chris Kyle was a Navy SEAL and author of the New York Times bestseller American Sniper.
A Texas State House Joint Resolution passed Thursday would, if passed by the Texas State Senate, ask the U.S. Congress to call an Article 5 convention, which would propose Constitutional amendments to impose fiscal restraint on the federal government, reduce its powers and jurisdiction, and limit the terms of office for federal officials and members of Congress.
