Reports of an active shooter at Navy Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) on Tuesday morning were followed by indications from two Navy spokesmen that the initial report was a false alarm, in what one called a “new reality…for the whole country.”

Navy Launches 2nd Missile off West Coast

On Monday, the U.S. Navy confirmed it had followed Saturday night’s launch of a Trident II (D5) missile from the U.S.S. Kentucky, a ballistic submarine in the Pacific Ocean, with a second launch Monday afternoon, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Today is the 70th anniversary of the sinking of the USS. Indianapolis, of one of the most terrible catastrophes in the history of the United States Navy. After completing a mission to deliver parts for the atomic bomb that would fall on Hiroshima, the battleship was struck by a torpedo from Japanese submarine I-58 en route to the Philippines.

Peyton Manning Establishes Chattanooga Heroes Fund

The University of Tennessee reports that Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has established a Chattanooga Heroes Fund to “support the families of those who lost their lives as well as those who were wounded in the tragic shootings on July 16.”

Navy Petty Officer Randall Smith, the Fifth Hero of Chattanooga

The five men who were killed in Chattanooga were heroes, not just because they died in service to their country, but because of what they did while they were alive. The fifth, Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Smith, succumbed to his wounds over the weekend, so he was not part of the tribute I wrote for the four Marines on Friday. Allow me to correct that omission.

China: Military May Now Hijack and Use Civilian Ships at Any Time

Following a bizarre statement that the “reclamation” of South China Sea areas historically not belonging to China is near completion, the Chinese government announced the passing of a new law which would require all private, civilian maritime vessels to be ready for military use “in cases of emergency.” Such a move converts civilian ships into military ships at any time.

Naval Chaplain Files Formal Complaint over Christian Persecution

Chaplain Wes Modder spends his days basically alone in the base chapel. He is no longer allowed into his office. By order of his commanding officer, he is not allowed even to speak to the sailors in his unit. If anyone from his unit comes into the chapel, he may not speak with them.

Pendleton Chopper Goes Missing During Nepal Earthquake Relief

A helicopter from U.S. Marines Camp Pendleton was on a rescue mission following the massive and deadly Nepal earthquakes when it lost contact Tuesday. Search efforts continue in hopes the six U.S. Marines and two Nepalese soldiers aboard the UH-1Y Huey are simply unable to communicate in the mountainous region.

ISIS Posts Hit List of 100 U.S. Military Personnel

The latest online threat from ISIS is a list of one hundred U.S. military personnel, with instructions for “our brothers residing in America” to hunt them down and “deal” with them. The listings include names, photographs, and other information.
