Texas Governor Greg Abbott deployed a contingent of Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Highway Patrol troopers to stop the free flow of mostly Haitian migrants from crossing the Rio Grande. The force of nearly 1,000 troopers and National Guard soldiers entered the makeshift migrant camp housing nearly 15,000 migrants under the Del Rio International Bridge.

Feds Ask Texas to Help with Del Rio Bridge Detention Camp Crisis

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials requested help from Texas officials to stem the growing humanitarian crisis in Del Rio where more than 9,000 migrants are detained under a bridge. Texas Governor Greg Abbott responded by sending additional DPS troopers and National Guard units to “shut down six ports of entry” and “stop the caravans from overrunning our state.”

Texas Governor to Sign Bill Stopping PR Bonds for Violent Criminal Suspects

Texas Governor Greg Abbott will sign the Damon Allen Act into law on Monday to stop the release on personal bonds of suspects charged with violent offenses. The bill honors Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Damon Allen who was murdered in 2017 by a man released on a low bond who had previously been convicted for assaulting a public servant.

New Texas Law Eases Burden in Prosecuting Human Smugglers

A new Texas law makes it easier to prosecute human smugglers by removing the requirement to prove the intent to obtain a “pecuniary benefit.” The bill also makes it a 3rd Degree Felony to “assist, guide, or direct” migrants to enter or remain on agricultural land without the consent of the owner.

Texas National Guard Authorized to Arrest Migrants Breaking State Law

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced the authorization for Texas National Guard troops to make arrests for violations of Texas law. The governor is also “surging” additional guardsmen to the border region. Abbott indicated troopers will be working with Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and local law enforcement authorities at the border to increase security.
