An Arizona border sheriff is warning his residents to take extra precautions in the coming days after intelligence reports point to Mexican cartel gunmen crossing into the United States to hunt down their rivals. Known as sicarios, the dangerous professional cartel assassins have previously crossed into the U.S. and are expected to cross to hunt down rival “rip crews” or groups who steal drugs from the cartels.

MCALLEN, Texas — Mexican cartel members kidnapped an American citizen in this border city and crossed him into Mexico and then demanded ransom money from his family. The region is controlled by the Gulf Cartel and outsiders engaging in kidnapping for ransom in their territory does not occur. The five self-confessed members of the Mexican Gulf Cartel who were arrested last week as they tried to raft their way into Texas received a slap on the wrist after U.S. federal authorities only charged them with common immigration charges. The minimal charges set against the cartel members, who had been fleeing a certain death at the hands of their own criminal organization, means that three cartel members will be released in 15 days, one will be released in 30 days while the fifth member will be released in a matter of months.
