The U.S. Department of State updated travel advisories warning tourists about increases in crime and violence in certain Mexican states that have reached the same security designation as the Afghanistan war zone.

Gulf Cartel gunmen set fire to numerous vehicles, threw road spikes, and placed several blockades throughout the streets of the Mexican border city of Reynosa. The hours-long gun battles with law enforcement are the latest in an ongoing series of clashes that have rocked the region.

Gunmen with Mexico’s Gulf Cartel carried out a brazen ambush against Tamaulipas State Police officers who were patrolling the highways. Gunmen injured one officer while it remains unclear if any cartel gunmen were injured or killed in the attack.

Gulf Cartel hitmen tracked down and murdered a woman who is believed to be one of their former members who had gone into hiding in the Mexican border state of Nuevo León. The cartel gunmen left the woman’s body on a dirt road and used a knife to stab a posterboard riddled with numerous threats.

Cartel violence in the Mexican border state of Sonora continues to escalate. Officials report 31 homicides in the capital city of Hermosillo in September — 52 more in Ciudad Obregón. The killings make the month the state’s most violent of 2018.

The Mexican military disarmed and replaced the entire police force in the beach resort town of Acapulco. The move comes as part of an investigation into the agency’s ties to drug cartels.

The Mexican military made its third major methamphetamine seizure in northern Mexico in the past week when the Mexican Navy announced the seizure of 10 tons of methamphetamine in the state of Sinaloa which occurred. The drug seizure occurred on August 22 as reported according to local media outlets. in local media

Two innocent victims died and a third was injured during a fierce gun battle in the border city of Nuevo Laredo. The deaths occurred when gunmen believed to be with a faction of Los Zetas attempted to ambush a squad of Mexican soldiers. The two innocent victims died when their vehicle became caught in the crossfire.

Two gunmen from the Gulf Cartel died in this border city during a recent series of shootouts with Tamaulipas state police forces and the Mexican military.

Teams of Gulf Cartel gunmen carried out a brazen rescue operation in an attempt to free one of their lieutenants who was being held in a Mexican border city courthouse. The large-scale gun battle killed one police officer and injured two others. 

An apparent chance encounter between the Mexican military and the security detail of the leader of one of the country’s most dangerous cartels was met with extreme violence. While both sides clashed, the leader escaped. The clash comes soon after authorities increased the reward being offered for his capture.

Kidnappings and carjackings continue to take place along the highways that traverse the border state of Tamaulipas. This is particularly true along highways that lead to the Mexican border with Texas. 

Many of the top U.S. airline companies are cutting their number of flights to Mexican beach resorts following reports of cartel violence and increasing passenger fears.
