Texas Sheriff Arrests Smuggler with 57 Migrants in Tractor-Trailer

A Texas sheriff ordered the arrest of an 18-wheeler driver allegedly found smuggling 57 migrants from the Rio Grande Valley. Border Patrol agents made the discovery of the human cargo loaded in the back of a locked tractor-trailer at an inspection checkpoint 80 miles from the Mexican border.

Deputies in South Texas are in the process of recovering the badly decomposed bodies of five migrants who appeared to have died from exposure during this week’s freezing weather conditions. The deaths occurred in Brooks County where it appears the migrants were attempting to circumvent the U.S. Border Patrol Checkpoint located south of Falfurrias.

Border Patrol agents in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Sector continue to confront the dangers they encounter in the nation’s busiest region for the apprehension of illegal immigrants. Agents in this sector apprehend more Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC), Family Unit Aliens (FMUA) than all other southwest border patrol sectors combined. Nearly half of all illegal aliens apprehended after crossing the border from Mexico are arrested in the 17,000 square miles of this sector.

A year-end report from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials reveals a 73 percent increase in the number of Border Patrol agents assaulted by illegal immigrants. A total of 786 agents were assaulted in 324 incidents over the period ending September 30, 2017.
