The State of Louisiana has been hit hard by the coronavirus. However, one of the state’s most beloved sports figures is stepping-up to support those who have supported him.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees is donating $5 million to combat the coronavirus in Louisiana.

Brees and his wife Brittany made the announcement on Instagram.

“The priority now is helping our communities get through this tough time,” he wrote. “After considerable research and conversations with local organizations, we will be mobilizing our partnerships with Second Harvest Food Bank, Ochsner Health Systems, Walk-Ons, Jimmy Johns, Smalls Sliders and Waitr to prepare and deliver over 10,000 meals per day throughout Louisiana for as long as it takes to children on meal programs, seniors, and families in need.

“Let’s all do our part, maintain hope, and get through this together.”

Brees’ head coach, Sean Payton, recently contracted the coronavirus, though it was announced on Thursday that Payton was cleared of the disease. LSU head coach Ed Orgeron has appeared on billboards urging Louisianans to practice social distancing.
