A day after trading away his backup, the Carolina Panthers are reportedly set to release their former #1 overall draft pick, Cam Newton.
The Panthers had given Newton the green light to seek a trade last week. With those negotiations apparently not amounting to anything, or not amounting to anything fast enough for the Panthers, the team decided to part with Newton.
There had been reported interest in Newton from the Chargers and Bears. However, since that time the Bears have traded for Nick Foles. That move effectively killed the trade market for Newton who appeared increasingly likely to be released and thus not worth trading for.
Newton’s replacement in Carolina is already in the building. The Panthers acquired former Saints quarterback Teddy Bridgewater last week and picked up XFL standout P.J. Walker this week.
The Panthers will gain $19.1 million in cap space by releasing Newton.
