On Monday, Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association cooperated to donate one million dollars to two meal services groups after schools were shut down across the nation.
The money will be split between Feeding America® and Meals on Wheels America, pro baseball noted.
Feeding America is set to use the donation to help feed kids in replacement of the school meals that have been temporarily halted in response to the coronavirus. Meals on Wheels will use its part of the donation to serve meals in-home to vulnerable seniors.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred released a statement about the donation, saying, “In these difficult times of navigating this pandemic, it is important that we come together as a society to help the most vulnerable members of our communities. As an institution, Baseball is extending our commitment to addressing childhood hunger and food availability issues during this crisis. We are grateful for the partnership with our players on this critical issue, which has the potential to deeply affect children and seniors.”
Players association chief Tony Clark added, “In this time of international crisis, players are eager to do their part both individually and collectively to ease the significant burdens placed on the most vulnerable people in our communities. This contribution represents one of those efforts.”
MLB’s 2020 season is currently delayed until mid-May. Commissioner Manfred said the league would also limit informal workouts for teams but would not fully lock down team facilities.
