The Ivy League schools have decided to cancel a basketball tournament and will limit the number of spectators at other sporting events over Corornavirus fears.
The decision, announced on the Ivy League website, claims that the move was made “in accordance with the guidance of public health and medical professionals to discourage and limit large gatherings on campuses.”
“We understand and share the disappointment with student-athletes, coaches, and fans who will not be able to participate in these tournaments,” Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris told the site. “Regrettably, the information and recommendations presented to us from public health authorities and medical professionals have convinced us that this is the most prudent decision.”
The league noted that ticket fees for the Ivy League Basketball Tournaments would be refunded.
Officials also said that postseason games might continue for winter teams, but the number of fans allowed to watch games will be restricted until further notice.
“Following a number of league-wide discussions throughout the last several weeks, we have decided to exercise caution in the interest of student-athletes, fans, and the general community,” Harris added.
The Ivy Leagues are joining leagues and sports across the nation that are beginning to respond to the Coronavirus. Among others, the ATP and WTA tennis tournament in Indian Wells, California, was recently cancelled over concerns about the virus.
Overseas, the Champions League match between Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund announced that the game will be played without fans as a preventative measure over the virus. Indeed, a series of games in Europe have been cancelled or restricted due to the virus.
